Shunra has released a tool called VE Desktop for Microsoft Visual Studio that allows developers to test an application’s readiness for the network before releasing the application. It is a well known fact that network professionals and software developers don’t always see eye-to-eye when it comes to network friendly code. The network guys want the software guys to write code that performs well for the network it will traverse. The software guys want the network guys to adjust the network to keep software running smoothly.
A tool that can test for network readiness may be the fix everyone needs. By bringing the network into the softdev testing environment, network-related problems with the code can be detected early enough in the cycle for the coders to fix, while keeping their projects on schedule. The product emulates limited network bandwidth, network latency (jitter), packet loss, congestion and so on. The software folks do not need to know a lot about the network to use it, its makers say. VE Desktop for Microsoft Visual Studio comes pre-packaged with libraries of typical network connections.
