Cisco has unveiled several new and enhanced products designed to bolster security in cloud computing and SaaS environments, a key challenge that could make or break these emerging IT trends. Colleague Ellen Messmer reported on the announcements, which were made at the RSA conference.
Cisco announced an update to its Webex Collaboration Cloud service that allows users to determine if participants are engaged in the meeting — or occupied with something else. The new Webex “attentiveness monitor” observes whether someone attending a Webex conference is distracted by another task or activity on their computer.ASR 1000 edge routers that optimizes bandwidth, video and VoIP performance for internal Webex meetings established through the WebEx Collaboration Cloud.

Cisco also added “reputation analysis” to the signature-based defense of its intrusion-prevention system, with IPS Sensor v. 7.0. This allows a Cisco IPS to detect and block traffic based on an analysis of threat intelligence aggregated and correlated by Cisco through a worldwide array of 700,000 sensors, Messmer reports.ASA 5500 security appliance that adds botnet-filtering to the product. This allows the ASA 5500 to identify infected computers and block them from contacting the botnet master trying to control them.

Cisco said security threats are heightened in cloud and virtualized computing environments because resources are shared between previously siloed operations. These new securiy holes opened up can hold back widespread adoption of virtualization and cloud computing.
