As part of its contract to supply Clearwire with IP infrastructure for its 4G mobile WiMAX rollout, Cisco is also developing WiMAX devices for end users. The press release even indicated these could be dual-radio WiMAX/WiFi devices.
Leveraging Linksys, which is part of the plan, one could envision a WiMAX/WiFi router/gateway or set-top box for the home or small office. Perhaps even a handheld WiMAX smartphone or PDA for the small business user, or in keeping with Cisco’s video push, a WiMAX IPTV and/or intercative video player/recorder for the consumer. The Flip camera (cameraphone?) for Clearwire is an clear possibility.
Any others come to mind? And what will be the impact, if any, of a Cisco infrastructure and devices on the acceptance of WiMAX — assuming Clearwire can deliver acceptable service and experience levels?
It will be fun to watch the progression of this project vs. the LTE rollouts from AT&T and Verizon — two huge Cisco router customers who’ve entrusted their 4G infrastructures to more traditional telecom vendors. The shootout might say a lot about which vendor and which technology is best equipped to deliver the next generation mobile experience.
