A number of iPhone owners who recently bought the white 3GS model are reporting that their devices have a tendency to overheat, resulting in the back of their white iPhones taking on a pinkish tint. According to user reports, this iPhone discoloration typically rears its ugly head when users engage in particularly processor intensive activities such as heavy GPS use and graphics hungry gaming. This, of course, isn’t the first time that Apple’s use of white plastic has been the center of discoloration issues as similar problems have surfaced in the past on Apple’s white laptops.

While it’s unclear just how many iPhone owners have been affected by this unfortunate discoloration, enough people have complained to attract Apple’s attention to the matter. In response, Apple recently put up a support document relating to overheating issues for the iPhone and lists a number of guidelines users should follow to keep their iPhone’s temperature within an acceptable range. The support doc, however, fails to reference any discoloration issues, and it remains to be seen what steps, if any, Apple will take to remedy the phones of affected users.

Notably, overheating and discoloration issues haven’t affected previous iterations of white-cased iPhone models.
