SQL Server
When I travel to the PASS Conference, I always attend a pre-conference session since I have to block out the week anyway so that’s my first big decision on the conference. Normally, they try to run these sessions on the Monday and Tuesday but it looks like this year they are running on Monday and Friday. This actually makes sense. Let’s take a look… The pre-conference sessions at the PASS Summit are typically for the full day, unlike the many actual conference sessions which are usually an hour or so. This gives us a day or two to focus on a particular subject that we have a special interest in. Having the second pre-conference sessions on the Friday means that most people will be able to fly out on Thursday leaving us hard-core sponges ready to learn more. The session I usually attend is hosted by Kalen Delaney. She always does a great job explaining the internals of SQL Server both live and in her books. She has a way of balancing the deep technical subjects with examples that make sense and help you understand what is happening under the hood – and why. This year she is running a session entitled intriguingly “Care and Feeding of the Transaction Log”. For many who are new to SQL Server, this is an easily misunderstood subject. Even for experienced DBA’s, this is a subject that continually needs revisiting based on support of new features in the product and how they relate to the internals of the transaction log. I’ll be there taking notes, for sure. I hope you are too. Cheers Brian
