Get ready. With both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 in RTM, we’re only weeks away of knowing if Vista is really behind us. Microsoft’s going to put the full court press on getting as much Windows 7 sold and installed out there as possible. That includes changes in the partner program with specific emphasis on the desktop OS. Microsoft announced changes in the Gold partner program, renamed the Microsoft Partner Network, asking VARs to get “deeper” and specialize, with some gaining an Advanced moniker rather then Gold Partner certification. It makes sense but it’s interesting that Microsoft coordinated the RTM of Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. WS2008 R2 has several new features in it that are specific to Windows 7. (Check out the podcast about Windows Server 2008 R2 to learn all the details.) DirectAccess is one of those capabilities, that transparently connects Windows 7 users to a server running WS2008 R2 (IPv6 is required so this feature will be slow to be adopted.)

Another WS2008 R2 + Windows 7 client feature is BranchCache, which improves network WAN performance by caching files (HTTP and SMB) locally at the branch office. Two modes are supported, caching content on a BranchCache server or caching content on Windows 7 clients (for scenarios where there are only 5-10 PCs at the branch location).

RemoteApp & Desktop (RAD) virtualizes individual applications enabled by Remote Desktop Services so an application icon can launch an application that’s running virtually on the server but presenting the app’s UI in a window on the desktop, appearing much like it would if it were running locally. Those are just a few of the new features in Windows Server 2008 R2 that pertain to Windows 7, and there are many others new things in R2 such as Hyper-V Live Migration, reduced CPU power consumption, a connection broker for Remote Desktop Servers, and a lot more. Check out the podcast with Windows Server Division product manager Eric Jewett for more information about WS2008 R2.
