Looks to improve IBM mainframe support
Cisco this week added new features to its MDS 9000 SAN switches in an effort to enhance storage performance on IBM mainframes as well as third-party SAN products. The enhancements to the MDS 9000 are intended to improve security and accelerate data traffic over distances as far as 20,000 kilometers, according to this report from colleague Jon Brodkin.
A new mainframe application called XRC Acceleration is designed to improve replication speed by buffering data at remote sites. This feature was developed jointly by IBM and Cisco.
For security, Cisco unveiled TrustSec Fibre Channel Link Encryption, which is designed to encrypt data traveling between data centers, or between switches within a data center. The encryption works with third party SAN products as well as IBM’s FICON.
Wonder if these enhancements will help boost Cisco’s foundering SAN market share?
