Swiss firm will add metering and applications to Cisco's IP strengths

Cisco has lined up another partner for its IP-based smart grid buildout initiative. Landis+Gyr, a Swiss developer of metering infrastructure and applications, will work with Cisco to deliver combined products designed to integrate existing energy delivery and measurement capabilities with renewable power sources, plug-in vehicles and automated distribution.

Cisco says the companies aim to promote open standards and enable a smart grid ecosystem of energy delivery and measurement partners.

The two companies also plan to define architectures for smart metering, utility data centers, and wireless and fixed last-mile communications to help ensure interoperability across each others’ smart grid systems.

Smart grids for energy distribution and measurement is Cisco’s latest emerging technology market. Cisco says the potential of this market is $100 billion, and in terms of scale, the buildout of smart grids is 1000x that of the Internet.
