Blog dedicated to free software, services and stuff IT professionals want and need.

“The best things in life are free.” For IT professionals, that saying applies to free tools available by way of open source communities, freeware developers or vendors looking to draw customers in with a no-cost version of their commercial software.

20 free software favorites

This blog will focus on the most recent releases — and old favorites — of free software and services. For instance, in July founders of former management industry darlings Micromuse and RiverSoft (the former acquired the latter and then the former was acquired by IBM so technology from both companies now resides under Big Blue’s wing) publicly launched a new company — RiverMuse — and its open source fault management system dubbed Core.

RiverMuse Core is said to use an “agile architecture to support modern service delivery infrastructures,” which the company says include virtualization, Web-based and SOA technologies at a lower cost of ownership.

According to the RiverMuse Web site: “RiverMuse’s agile architecture allows developers to add and evolve custom functionality in a re-usable manner, allowing users to implement in step with their need and the community to benefit from a rich pool of re-usable plug-ins and add-on utilities. Open source allows the community to harness the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process.”

Does RiverMuse inspire you? Will you test this open source application? Let me know what you find, what you want to hear more about and what invaluable tools you use — that don’t cost you a thing at ddubie@nww.com.
