Take a look back at network past as Network Instruments celebrates 15
Where were you 15 years ago? Perhaps wearing your favorite flannel, rocking to grunge, while waiting for your Windows NT server to boot up. Maybe using Pine to check your e-mail, or Mosaic to surf around what was quickly becoming the web. In 1994, Network Instruments’ two founders CEO Roman Oliynyk and President Douglas Smith quit their jobs and began working to produce a higher performing and more cost-effective network analysis solution. What began in Douglas’ basement as a simple software product evolved into a fully-integrated platform for managing network and application performance. To commemorate the anniversary, we’ve asked industry pundits and customers to discuss major network changes over the past 15 years. I’ll be sharing these thoughts regularly. It’d also be great to hear from you. What are the biggest developments or changes in networking over the last few years? The first thoughts I’ll share are from Douglas, when I asked what he saw as major network developments. “It’s amazing to think about how far we have come as a company and how much the industry has changed in 15 years. We hosted the original Observer download on CompuServe and a bulletin board system (BBS). It would have been hard to have foreseen then how tightly integrated networking and the Internet would become in the fabric of global business.
