Xangati upgrades its AppMonitor suite to help enterprise IT managers better track application performance across a virtual environment down to the end-user desktop.
Managing application performance is a complicated task that requires IT managers to gather and analyze metrics from multiple systems. Add to that virtual environments in which the rate of change increases exponentially, and pinpointing application performance problems can seem next to impossible.

That’s why executives at Xangati said they upgraded the company’s troubleshooting technology to be able to navigate virtual environments, showing IT managers how applications perform down to the end-user desktop. Xangati AppMonitor for Virtualization Management is a add-on component to the company’s platform, which uses “rapid problem identification” (RPI) technology and requires a Xangati platform appliance to run. AppMonitor runs on top of the Xangati’s appliance and provides IT and business owners will real-time insight into the activity of their application on the network. The technology can also bring together application activity and end-user response time to help IT better understand application performance and the conditions that directly impact it.
“This release focuses on application performance issues in the virtual realm. We have an understanding of the need for fine granularity down to the end user or the individual experience with an application and how that can vary,” says David Messina, vice president of product marketing and management at Xangati. “With AppMonitor we have extended visibility out to the end user and we are allowing the end user to share that information back with IT to help close the loop on application performance issues.”
Xangati’s appliance uses “flow information (NetFlow, sFlow, cFlow) or packets available from existing enterprise switches and routers to automatically discover all the IP endpoints.” The technology then builds a topology of endpoints and the application usage across the endpoints. Following that, the appliance builds a profile of each endpoint using variables such as bit rate (in and out), packet rate (in and out), burstiness, interactions, endpoint affinity, application affinity, location affinity and time affinity. The profiles provide the appliance with typical “day-in-the-life” scenarios for endpoints, which helps the technology more quickly discern when behavior strays from normal. The appliance can then correlate behavior symptoms across time of day, location and application usage to drill down to the exact cause and alert staff to any abnormal occurrences.
“Any communication on the infrastructure is something we can track,” Messina adds. “AppMonitor lets IT managers know which virtual servers are talking to which end users and what applications are involved. And it gives business owners a sense of what is going on in a non-technical fashion.”
Available now, pricing for AppMonitor for Virtualization Management starts at $2,100 for an annual subscription for the capability (base Xangati platform also required) and the product is also offered through a monthly subscription rate of less than $1,000, with the base Xangati platform included.
