Description: This is an EVDO Rev A adapter for use on Sprint’s domestic network. This device is not compatible with Sprint’s (soon to be Clearwire’s) WiMAX network. But Rev A is now available in many Sprint markets, and it’s what you want if you’re going with CDMA data. This adapter has three clever features. First is a microSD memory card slot, which can take up to a 4GB card. Next, it has GPS and links to such services as Mapquest and Google Maps. And finally, it can get up and running without using a separate connection manager application (although one is also available if you prefer).
Farpoint Group, by the way, recommends USB wireless WAN adapters in place of built-in solutions. It’s easy to move the adapter from PC to PC, and even share it if desired – important in holding down the (still) relatively high cost of service (plan on about $60/month). We tried the “lite” media-less installation on XP; it hung, but re-plugging the device got things moving again quickly. The GPS functionality was excellent, with support for finding local services, and throughput was quite good as well. If you’re looking for a mobile broadband device, this is an excellent choice – lots of function at one low price.
