The annual Network World Salary Survey shows pay raises for IT leaders and staff will be minimal this year. The survey shows an average 2.3% salary increase for the year. With inflation hovering at around 3.9%, it’s not surprising IT respondents feel underpaid. The good news, however, is that they’re still collecting a paycheck.
Base pay for IT respondents as a whole equates to $88,800 on average. Senior IT executives collect an average salary of $120,800; middle managers make $93,700, and staffers earn $78,400. It also depends on where you live. IT workers in New England reaped the highest base salaries with $97,600, while workers in the Southern Midwest region of Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee command base pay of $74,800.
Despite salary freezes, there’s good news in bonuses, which offer employers a way to reward workers for individual performance. And perks such as time off, work-schedule flexibility and basic job security make for decent job satisfaction among respondents.

Dress for the job you want
If you do happen to be seeking a job in 2009, employers want to see you in a business suit. A recent survey from Robert Half Technology shows that 35% of CIOs said a business suit is the most appropriate interview attire for prospective IT employees. A more relaxed 26% deem khakis and a collared shirt OK, while 24% suggest tailored separates such as a jacket and dress pants or skirt and blouse. And for 9%, it would be fine to show up in jeans and a polo.
