Yes, the customer should have done a backup but didn’t. The computer store, as part of a $1,000 sale, had agreed to transfer data from the old PC to the newly bought one … but didn’t. In fact, the store discarded the old hard drive, which contained 7 years’ worth of irreplaceable data. Leaving the question: What, if anything, does the careless store owe the careless customer? After a month of haggling by the store, the customer and a host of blog readers who were asked their opinions, the principals have reached a compromise: $500. Fair?
