* Web 2.0 technologies are taking off in the enterprise
Web 2.0 technologies such as wikis, blogs and RSS feeds are taking off in the enterprise, according to a new report from advisory firm Nemertes Research.
The study, “Collaboration Applications,” is based on interviews with more than 120 IT executives. Of those, 32% are using wikis, 23% are using RSS and 18% are using blogs. Shared workspaces are at the heart of most corporate asynchronous collaboration strategies. These provide a centralized means of storing files, tracking and managing tasks, and managing document revisions. A full 65% of organizations have deployed a collaborative workspace, with another 5% pondering deployment.
In terms of products being used, companies are investigating both commercial and open source solutions. In terms of product choices, 55% have selected vendors such as Microsoft or IBM as strategic collaboration partners, while 26% are considering using open source applications. According to Nemertes, many respondents don’t think open source is ready for the enterprise and are concerned about support cost, scalability, security, reliability and feature sets.
“So far, this lack of support is the gating factor for widespread deployment of open source collaboration and communications applications in the enterprise,” says Irwin Lazar, principal analyst and program director for Nemertes Research’s convergence and collaboration practice.
