I have a Novatel Merlin 620 CDMA-EVDO cellular data card for my laptop that stopped working recently after a software upgrade failed part way through. I tried to uninstall the software driver to reinstall it again but the uninstaller program fails with an error message and now I’m stuck. Now when I try to run the installer from the original CD I am only offered an option to remove the software and that fails too. What can I do besides reformatting my laptop and starting from scratch?

Start by looking in the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel for an item called V620 and remove that. It is part of the software stack for the Merlin 620 card. Then get a copy of CCleaner and use that to clean up your system and registry. After that, use the Run option in the Program menu to run “regedit.” Highlight the top entry in the registry list and use the Edit/Find command to search for “Novatel.” Carefully remove every registry key you find containing “Novatel.” This will take a while, since there may be dozens of entries to delete. Once that is done, reboot and look again in the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel. There should no longer be an entry there for your Novatel card or the connection manager program. At this point you should be able to reinstall the software from the original CD and use the card again. Once it is working be sure you have a strong connection before saying yes when prompted to install the software upgrade again.
