Another tactic is to employ Web 2.0 social to tap tech talent. Zero in on passive job hunters (those who are not looking but may consider a move) by combing through blogs, social networking sites such as LinkedIn, and lurking on online discussion groups. Scott Melland, CEO of IT job site Dice.com, recommends offering comprehensive benefits packages that illustrate how the company values its IT employees. What’s more, you’ve got to provide training and the opportunity for workers to keep their certifications current. (See “How to win the battle for network talent”).

Skills bonuses can also be effective in rewarding certain high-demand specialties without throwing your compensation structure out of whack. Convergence, security and storage are in vogue.
