Cisco facing up to challenges, 07/19/07: As Cisco prepares to meet with thousands of customers at this week’s Networkers conference in Anaheim, Calif., it is facing several challenges: Sales to U.S. enterprises are slowing, forcing the company to look for growth overseas; margins are eroding in some markets; the company faces new low-cost competitors; and its core technologies are becoming increasingly commoditized.
UPDATE: Cisco confirms its network gear caused Duke’s iPhone flooding, 07/20/07: Cisco confirmed that the networking problem Duke University experienced involving Cisco’s wireless network and Apple’s iPhone was caused by a Cisco network issue. Cisco says it has worked closely with Duke and Apple to identify the source of the problem.
On the eve of its annual Networkers lovefest Cisco confirmed that a “Cisco-based network issue” caused iPhones to flood Duke University’s wireless LAN. Cisco failed to provide any other details or issue general fixes as of late Friday, leaving other organizations worried that they too will face similar problems. A reader of the FT’s interview with John Chambers questions the validity of his reference of the lower number of U.S. graduates compared to the numbers produced in India and China.
Cisco mulling CCIE-level certification for network designers, 07/18/07: Cisco confirmed that it is planning a higher level certification for its design track that would be on par with its current Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert program. Design is the only track that is without a CCIE designation, which is set apart from the company’s other certification programs through its tough lab exams. Its other programs are based on written tests only. There are CCIE exams for Cisco’s routing & switching, network security, service provider, storage networking, and voice certification tracks.
