* ‘Managing VoIP across the Wan’ Webcast

Today, we’d like to offer a quick review of what to consider when managing VoIP performance, and refer our readers to a great on-demand Webcast that provides a technical discussion of the issues that may affect VoIP performance in an end-to-end scenario.

As we have noted before, managing voice quality with VoIP is an ongoing process that a) starts before VoIP deployment with a data and voice network assessment, b) requires solid network design for both the voice and data applications that will traverse the network, and c) continues with performance management tools that allow the network manager to make needed adjustments as the enterprise network changes.

Fluke Networks has posted a Webcast titled “Managing VoIP across the WAN” that can be accessed here. From a high level view, the Webcast emphasizes – and we agree, that having a strategic plan in place for VoIP performance management that includes visibility from edge-to-core is imperative to successfully managing a network. The 32 minute presentation covers common pitfalls to avoid, the VoIP management lifecycle, impacts of a converged network, managing VoIP and data together, how to improve performance, and offers some real-life examples. Technical considerations are also reviewed about packet loss, delay, jitter, and bandwidth.

As the last several “VoIP State of the Market” reports published on Webtorials will attest, VoIP performance and performance management continue to be concerns for those considering a VoIP deployment, and network planners who have VoIP on their roadmap should educate themselves about VoIP performance issues and available solutions as they turn their strategic plans into a VoIP deployment.
