* ITAA's Top 10 Policy Issues
The Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) recently released its list of Top 10 Policy Issues . The trade organization focuses on public policy, business networking and national leadership to promote the growth of the IT industry.
According to the agenda released last month, the main initiatives the group wants to accomplish are as follows:
1. Promote U.S. competitiveness at home and abroad. The group recommends retaining jobs and growing tech talent through steps such as doubling the graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math at U.S. schools over the next decade, strengthening the research and development tax credit and promoting the use of H1-B visas and green cards for foreign talent.
2. Promote information security. Ways to achieve this include driving collaborative industry security solutions, adopt a national data breach notification standard, address cybersecurity standards and spur global awareness and cooperation of cybersecurity.
3. Press for continuing government procurement reform. A few of the pertinent goals are to promote commercial procurement practices and preserve outsourcing opportunities.
4. Defend intellectual property rights. Improve patent quality and fight government mandates requiring particular software development models and resist overly burdensome regulation of social networks on the Internet.
5. Protect digital commerce from government intervention. Oppose attempts to impose overly burdensome data privacy regimes on global commerce and promote secure digital identity management solutions.
6. Promote technologies that advance the full potential of the networked economy. Support faster, more ubiquitous broadband access, content and services availability and RFID.
7. Oppose discriminatory taxation of Internet sales and ISPs. Oppose state efforts to tax Internet access.
8. Demand more, better market access for goods, services and software. Work on favorable WTO treatment for software downloads and extend Internet delivery of services.
9. Oppose global Internet regulation. Oppose non-commercial Internet charging arrangements and an elevated role for national government
10. Promote sound corporate governance principles.
