This is a shameless plug made in order to fill the room for a colleague who is giving a talk at next week’s Interop trade show in Las Vegas. But my shame is somewhat mitigated by the fact that this should be an interesting session if you are at all interested in speeding up Windows application performance across WAN links.

But my shame is somewhat mitigated by the fact that this should be an interesting session if you are at all interested in speeding up Windows application performance across WAN links.

At 12:15 PM on Tuesday in the Mandalay Bay J room at the Mandalay Bay Conference Center, Network Lab Alliance partner David Newman (whose day job is president of Network Test, and independent testing house based in southern California), will deliver a talk entitled “Testing WAN Optimization products: What traffic mix should you bet on?”

Multiple vendors offer appliances that use TCP and CIFS tricks to improve Windows application performance across WAN links. Based on his most recent tests of this category of products conducted for Network World, Newman will discuss whether or not these mechanisms work in general. Additionally, he’ll provide a strategy for designing and running meaningful tests based on the types of applications in your own environment.

If you happen to miss this talk, you’ll be sorry, but not totally out of luck. The full results of Newman’s testing will be published in Network World in early July.
