Acceleration, security as a service

The slew of news around acceleration, security and optimization technologies in 2006 could make any enterprise network manager’s head spin. How do you incorporate all the tools you need to deliver applications securely and quickly without overhauling your network?

Netli has some ideas to address that question. The managed services provider specializes in accelerating applications and delivering content securely over the Internet.

Netli delivers its services via its Application Delivery Network available though its core platform NetliOne. For instance, the company’s NetLightning service offering uses a proprietary protocol to speed traffic across long stretches of the Internet. NetLightning is designed to reduce network response time to less than 1 second by using Netli points of presence connected by Layer 4 trunks, created with a replacement for TCP that the company says is more efficient. Once customers sign up for the service, they redirect traffic to the nearest Netli POP and the traffic is carried over Netli virtual trunks to the POP nearest the destination address.

This week, the company will enhance it service offerings to include accelerated SSL traffic delivery as well as digital rights management features. The Netli Accelerated SSL Delivery “combines a FIPS 140-2 Level 3-compliant private key escrow system and integrated SSL acceleration sub-systems to enable transport and application-layer optimizations on SSL-encrypted content,” according to Netli. The service also supports x.509 client certificates, which Netli says are used to secure access of mission-critical, encrypted dynamic applications, content, and Web services.

Netli DRM [digital rights management] is a platform-independent service that features policy controls and visibility into downloads with full audit trail and reporting capabilities.

Netli competitor Akamai offers managed acceleration services for enterprise IT managers. Verizon resells Netli services.

Netli Accelerated SSL Delivery and Netli DRM services are available now. Both services are sold as add-ons to the core offering and cost about $5,000 per month each, plus an initial set up fee. The set up fee varies, but pricing starts at $2,500. Entry level pricing for the core service NetLightning is about $8,000 per month.
