Wi-Fi body to simplify security setup
The group that certifies Wi-Fi products aims to make more wireless LANs secure by taking some of the work out of locking them down. The Wi-Fi Alliance is set to announce on Monday at the International Consumer Electronics Show its Wi-Fi Protected Setup specification, which lays out an easier process for setting up a secure wireless LAN. The group will also reveal the first devices certified under WPS, though it will take a few more months for consumer products to reach store shelves. Apple’s Macworld opens arms to corporate users
When the Macworld Conference & Expo kicks off this week, attendees can expect the usual buzz around consumer products – Steve Jobs is expected to formally unveil iTV, a video streaming device, during his keynote address Tuesday and there is speculation that a new iPod and perhaps even an iPhone will be introduced. But there also will be a heightened focus on enterprise customers as Apple has in the past couple years bolstered its standing as a viable server alternative in corporate data centers. Storage vets push new hybrid technologies, 1TB disk drives
Storage vendors have had a busy week, banding together to promote new flash-embedded drive technology while independently devising plans to cram more capacity into smaller disk drives. Five big guns – Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Seagate Technology, Fujitsu, Samsung and Toshiba – formed the Hybrid Storage Alliance, an industry group that will show how hybrid disks that include flash memory can enhance notebook computers. Real-time collaboration gets real
Until recently, more than 2,000 employees at SAS, the world’s largest privately held software company, were using a hodgepodge of consumer instant-messaging tools that lacked enterprise-level security and robust functionality. The company rectified that situation by deploying Microsoft Live Communication Server and Microsoft Office Communicator 2005 clients. Today, more than 3,000 of SAS’s 10,000 employees are using the system, which integrates with various applications so co-workers can collaborate from a spreadsheet, a document or line-of-business system, such as CRM.
