* Download MaXware DSE Lite for free

This week we’re talking about free offers: last issue I mentioned new ones from Ping Identity and this issue we’ll look at a very good, free, limited-time offering from MaXware.

I’ve covered MaXware in this newsletter for most of this century, although the company’s roots go back eight to 10 years more. When I first came across MaXware it was as a vendor of a virtual directory but it has come a long way since then, leveraging that expertise to emerge as a leader in a number of different identity-related areas:

* Data synchronization and virtualization.

* Provisioning and workflow.

* Federation and Web single sign-on.

Over the years I’ve known the company, it has always shown the ability to price its goods and services so that it can profit while the customer gets good value. The offering I want to talk about today is certainly good value – but there’s not a lot of profit!

For a limited time (until the end of July), there’s a slimmed down version of the Data Synchronization Engine (DSE Lite) available for free download.

The DSE is the robust engine that powers MaXware Virtual Directory (MVD). The Lite version is, essentially, the same engine with the limitation that it only connects two data sources, not the unlimited number that the full-blown DSE connects. It’s also limited to 25,000 entries – which should be more than enough for synchronizing any two data sources. The third limitation is that there’s no support for Java (which the DSE has), although it does support Javascript. Still, you can connect the two data sources via LDAP, ODBC, ASCII, LDIF, WinNT, XML, and Shell scripts – that should enable everyone to be able to use it.

Key features of DSE Lite include:

* The ability to connect to any directory server, database or proprietary repository, using one of the built-in connectors. If none of the connectors suit the need, the repository can be accessed by writing a plug-in for the repository.

* Most configurations can be done by the user interface. This is where you define the attributes to be read and written, and how to format them. For more advanced tasks, scripting can be used.

* DSE Lite supports JavaScript, VBScript and Perl, for performing data manipulation to the attributes.

* The advanced delta mechanism of DSE Lite will ensure that only changes are written to the target systems. This will reduce the write load of the target system.

* It includes an audit trail mechanism that keeps a complete record of which changes were applied, and when. DSE Lite monitors the complete history of any entry within the directory, down to the attribute level.

* DSE Lite can utilize existing change-log features of directory servers, or add triggers to SQL databases to achieve the same functionality. This will ensure that only changes are read, and reduce the read load on the source system.

* Connectors are included for LDAP servers (any directory server supporting LDAP Version 2 or Version 3) and databases (any database with a ODBC interface).

You’re really getting more than you pay for here! But hurry, this is a limited time offer, which most likely won’t be repeated. Download your copy of DSE Lite today!
