If you are trying to make it simple for your users to create Web sites then you can either start handing out copies of Web editing software – usually an expensive exercise – or you can provide a Web-based solution. Although such a solution is less flexible than a desktop editor, it has some major advantages beyond saving money. It is faster to deploy and support costs tend to be much less.
A set of products to address the market for a Web-based solution is CM4all from Content Management.
Content Management claims that its product is scalable and as a branded solution, this has obvious appeal to the likes of ISPs, hosting providers, and telcos. The functionality of CM4all can be tailored for particular business content management processes.
The CM4all product family includes WebsiteCreator, a Web site creation tool, and MediaCenter, a photo management and display solution.
WebsiteCreator’s features include mobile blogging, photo albums, Flash animations, guest books, feedback forms, online forums and voting tools with e-commerce support through online shop services, databases and PayPal integration.
Other WebsiteCreator facilities include maps and driving directions (provided through Microsoft MapPoint Web Service), 350-plus design templates, integrated image editing and Flash creation tools, automated content generation for themes, FTP upload and publishing.
The user interface is platform and browser-neutral while the server side requires Debian 3, at least a dual Intel P4 2.0 GHz with 4GB RAM and a RAID system (1+0) of at least 290GB. Content Management claims this configuration will support up to 100,000 clients per server.
WebsiteCreator has two major architectural themes: The first is that it is designed for security and integrity, the second, it is XML-based and its APIs and extensions are designed to support SOAP.
MediaCenter is a general file store with an interface that is similar to Windows Explorer and it supports WebDAV allowing direct desktop integration with Windows clients. Users can create any number of albums and can assign rights to other users to control access to albums. MediaCenter also includes a suite of image editing tools.
The server configuration for MediaCenter is the same as WebsiteCreator and a single server can be used to run both systems.
