* Newest Transition Networks LAN switch adds to MILAN line
Transition Networks last week started shipping a small remotely managed switch with all Gigabit Ethernet interfaces for indoor and outdoor applications.
The “MILAN by Transition” switch has nine ports of 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet for copper cables. It also has two Gigabit SFP fiber-optic interfaces. The switch has been designed for the outdoors, with temperature resistance (for zero to 60 degrees Celsius) and a compact size.
On the management front, the switch can support SNMP for sending management data to a central console, IEEE 802.1Q for virtual LANs, priority queues for sending voice over the data network, and Web-based management.
The fiber ports can be used to interconnect switches and create a “super ring” for resiliency, Transition says.
Last November, Transition’s parent company, Communications Systems Inc., consolidated Transition’s operations with that of another wholly owned subsidiary, MiLAN Technology. Since then, the combined company has been building up two brands – one for Transition’s strength in media conversion and one for MiLAN’s network connectivity technologies – and obviously last week’s announcement helps boost the MILAN brand (now with a capital “I”).
On the media conversion side, Transition last week also announced serial-to-Ethernet converters that allow customers to integrate serial-based devices into their Ethernet networks, either in an office or on a factory floor.
The device servers have either fiber-based Fast Ethernet or 10/100Mbps Ethernet copper interfaces. One converts RS232 to 100Base-FX, and another converts RS422/485 to 100Base-FX. Two others convert RS232/422/485 to either 100Base-FX fiber or 10/100Base-TX copper. All are available now.
