Amid controversy and customer demand surrounding a flaw in its Windows operating system, Microsoft on Thursday abandoned its announced timetable for supplying a fix and rushed a patch onto its Web site to correct a problem that could allow a hacker to gain control over desktops or servers.

EMC getting more serious about grids

EMC is stepping up its activities in the grid technology space via a tie-up with customer information management company Acxiom, the storage giant announced Thursday. EMC is also making its first significant acquisition of grid technology, paying $30 million to purchase Acxiom’s information grid software, which Acxiom originally created to meet its needs and those of its customers.

Illinois school latest to launch RFID lab

This past year was truly “The Year of the RFID Lab” at universities and colleges, right to the very end. An Illinois community college announced plans in late December to open what it says is a unique hands-on operation that will ready students to work with the wireless tag technology in manufacturing and other lines of business.
