Network General this week will announce an upgraded version of its high-performance network performance analysis product, which the company says provides more data-mining capabilities and faster time to problem resolution.

InfiniStream 2.0, scheduled to ship in April, will offer IT managers a 30,000-foot view of performance and also let them drill down through a new GUI to get granular information regarding network and application performance, the company says. Other new features include integration with other Network General products to provide long-term trend analysis as well as expert decoding and analysis on the fly.

“InfiniStream can report on volumes of data in as small as 15-second intervals, or it can offer long-term trending,” says Catherine Nadeau, InfiniStream product marketing manager.

The product combines a 4-terabyte storage capacity with Sniffer analysis technology to help IT managers tackle continuous and real-time packet capture. The appliances come in either a 10/100M bit/sec Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet bundle, connect via a tap or mirror port to a switch at the network core or at the distribution layer, and watch packets traverse the network. Network General says InfiniStream 2.0 can be used for both troubleshooting and real-time monitoring.

Also new in this version are management-level reports that, Nadeau says, will give IT managers proof points to make their case for continuous network management, capacity planning and resource allocation to business and higher-level IT management.

Network General’s InfiniStream 2.0 competes most directly with products from Niksun.

Pricing for InfiniStream 2.0 can range from $35,000 to $75,000, depending on network configuration.
