Speedera last week introduced a service to help enterprise companies manage spikes in application demand and better distribute applications to remote users.

Speedera’s FlexComputing uses the company’s content delivery network (CDN) already in place in points of presence and carrier backbones around the world. The service is designed either to host frequently used applications with common components that can be easily cached at the edge of the network or to provide additional capacity at peak load times for specific applications.

As part of Speedera’s SpeedSuite that includes services for digital content and streaming media, FlexComputing deploys customers’ own applications running on Intel platforms on Speedera’s hosted network of servers worldwide. Speedera network operations centers monitor the FlexComputing services 24/7 to ensure customer applications are being delivered as promised. The company says the service can guarantee great application availability and uptime, and only requires customers to pay for the capacity they use instead of having to build out their networks to support peak loads.

“Initially our CDN service was used to distribute content on the edge, and now with FlexComputing we can distribute application logic across the network,” says Bruno Goveas, Speedera product manager for FlexComputing. “We started with static content, then moved to dynamic content, and then we did streaming media, and now we’re moving into distributing applications.”

The exact pricing for the service is yet to be determined and would depend on customer implementations. However, Speedera requires a minimum of $1,000 per month for its services.
