Start-up RealOps says its new software will streamline IT operations and maximize IT resources through automation.

RealOps, of Herndon, Va., last month launched Automation Management Platform (AMP), which uses server and agent software to collect data across a data center and then integrate the data at one central location. The software uses bi-directional connectors to collect additional data from third-party systems, such as other management tools or customer relationship management systems. The data is aggregated and normalized, and then the software identifies whether the collected data matches a pre-defined automated action in AMP’s library.

The library, which can be customized by network managers using RealOps’ software development kit, includes workflows and actions that could be taken in response to specific events or used to complete a process. The company says customers can design their own workflows based on conditional statements.

AMP comes with workflow templates based on the Information Technology Infrastructure Library, and the company says it foresees the software becoming a management portal interface for its customers.

RealOps’ founders, who spun the software company out of IT operational management consultancy Windward Consulting Group, say AMP will help IT shops inch their way closer to automated operations.

“We built a product that could automate a lot of the routine tasks needed to perform the triage activities around problem identification, diagnosis and validation,” says Sean McDermott, RealOps’ president, CEO and founder. “We found customers having a hard time integrating their multiple tools for management and decided we could provide some shortcuts.”

Along with fellow start-up Optinuity, RealOps will compete with the likes of Opsware, the company says.

RealOps is targeting large enterprise companies, service providers and government agencies with AMP, which can cost about $250,000 for an average implementation.
