Outsourcing

With all the attention outsourcing is getting from politicians these days, I thought I’d put together some of the leading thoughts on the matter.

First, powerful Federal Reserve chairman Allan Greenspan told a congressional committee recently that restricting the current offshoring movement with new laws and regulations would ultimately be a mistake for the U.S. economy (https://edworkforce.house.gov/). His word has been as good as gold on Wall Street, but not sure he has any influence in the boardroom.

President Bush agrees, sometimes, arguing that protectionist measures will hurt the economy. But he’s under a lot of pressure from politicos in hard-hit states such as Ohio, California and South Carolina to get behind their efforts to curb offshoring.

Meanwhile Sen. John Kerry, the likely Democratic presidential nominee is now promising to look at the situation but says he wants to make an effort to keep jobs in the U.S. Democrats in general have made it clear that the current labor situation – and the offshoring of jobs in particular – will be a central focus of the 2004 campaign season (https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A34891-2004Mar5.html?referrer=email).
