One thing we don’t need is another wireless LAN acronym, but alas, that’s what we have to talk about this week.
Joining the alphabet soup of wireless acros-you’ll-e-hearing-a-lot-about is 802.11e.
In a nutshell, the IEEE is working on 802.11e as a method to define quality of service (QOS) for wireless networks. Currently wireless environments have no effective way to prioritize traffic.
The 802.11e proposal would set up ways of delegating priority to certain types of traffic, say voice on a wireless net. The 802.11e would be required for streaming video as well.
The idea is to get a standard in place before every wireless vendor implements its own non-standard priority methods. Cisco, for example, uses non-standard technology in its wireless access points.
