Peribit speeds WAN traffic

Peribit Networks last week announced a product the company says can reduce the response time of WAN applications.

Peribit’s SR-80 Sequence Reducer can support up to 320 connections to other Peribit SR units over a WAN in a 2-rack-unit system. It features a front-panel keypad for configuration, an LCD display for monitoring, dual redundant power supplies and interfaces for 10/100/1000M bit/sec Ethernet connections over either copper or fiber.

The SR-80’s high-availability interface and power features are designed to ensure increased uptime for enterprise WANs using both network- and device-level redundancy.

Peribit also unveiled a technology that will be included in its products to further speed the time it takes applications to traverse a WAN. Packet Flow Acceleration (PFA) integrates into Peribit quality-of-service technologies such as Molecular Sequence Reduction and other Peribit products to address what the company says are the primary three WAN performance inhibitors: bandwidth capacity, application contention and latency.

The company’s Molecular Sequence Reduction (MSR) technology uses pattern-matching techniques to identify and eliminate repetitive data patterns traversing WAN links. By removing these repetitions, Peribit says its products can increase WAN link capacity up to 10 times – without upgrading the net.

Peribit says PFA further increases capacity by minimizing the effect of latency on WAN applications. PFA accelerates short flows by optimizing the TCP session initialization process, which improves the performance of transaction-based applications. For large bulk data transfers, PFA minimizes the TCP idle time during which the server is unable to transfer more data due to WAN latency. This results in an optimized data flow from sender to receiver and a reduction in the total time to completion for the data transfer, Peribit says.

The SR-80 is scheduled to ship at the end of October, and pricing will start at $22,500.
