In mode 1, Microsoft continues to support content developed for older browsers. Mode 2 is a hybrid-standards mode of IE 8: “It’s a start on standards, but does not really achieve fully standards support,” according to CMS Wire. Mode 3 is the ‘super standards’ mode of IE 8, which will be enabled by default. Developers who want IE7 “standards” must turn it on by adding a meta tag to their pages, according to CMS Wire.
