No two competitors are swinging harder at the Unified Communications pinata than Cisco and Microsoft. A side-by-side comparison of the technologies and case studies of companies who each choose one competitor over the other was released today by Network World (complete with slide-show, of course.).
In the big picture view, Cisco’s approach to unified communications is not particularly surprising for a company with its roots in hardware. It views UC as a network-based, hardware-intensive platform that can be extended to support for more environments – like point-of-sale systems, non-PC workgroups and mobile device platforms and it downplays the desktop- or server-based strategies. Microsoft‘s idea is equally not shocking given its roots. Microsoft has made software the cornerstones of its UC strategy.
