There is a 60,000-person shortfall between the supply of networking talent and the market demand for highly skilled tech workers in North America, according to an IDC report sponsored by Cisco Learning Institute. The 8% gap is expected to continue through 2011, according to the Cisco Press release. Network security, wireless and voice were cited by survey respondents as areas crying out for specialists, as more than 35% of businesses said they had immediate openings for voice experts.
Nineteen percent said they were looking for wireless experts. IDC also estimates that 11 percent of security specialist positions will be unfilled in 2011 because of a lack of skilled professionals, representing a gap of nearly 35,000 positions, according to the Cisco news release.
According to the survey of 500 network managers from a broad range of industries, employers expect to increase the number of networking staff over the next four years.
