In a recent interview with GigaOm’s Om Malik, Dell chief Michael Dell admitted the PC maker was “working” on some kind of smartphone. He just wouldn’t be pinned down on what kind.
When asked if he had any plans for a smartphone, Dell said the company was looking into it but users shouldn’t expect anything “anytime soon.” When asked whether a Dell smartphone would support either Nokia’s Symbian OS or Google’s Android, Dell was coy: “We’re not ready to publicly disclose our plans there…we’re kind of working on that,” he said.
Whatever the decision there–and it may end up being no decision at all if analyst Jack Gold’s prediction turns out to be true–Dell, like Apple before it, could be poised to make a real splash in the smartphone market.
