Large enterprises looking to Google’s Search Appliance to index and search corporate documents now have a choice. Instead of clustering together the older model of Google’s Search Appliance, the GB-1001, to reach the 10 million indexed documents mark, they can now drop just one new GB-7007 model in and handle 10 million documents right off the bat.
The new GB-7007 also offers improved end-user features, including personalized alerts and results ranking. The personalized alerts let employees receive e-mails when new documents related to their interests are created, much like Google’s Web-based Google Alert system. Plus search results can now be tailored to individual end-users or groups, and can be adjusted based on user department or job function.
But the best part is the improved ease of indexing large sites. By having just one appliance handle up to 10 million documents, Google is making it far easier for larger sites to implement enterprise search. The company will still offer the older GB-1001, however, since the new version has no clustering capabilities. Enterprises needing to index more than 10 million documents will still need to use the GB-1001 and cluster together as many as eight units, for a 30-million-document capacity. Google is taking orders for the GB-7007, which becomes generally available next month.
