Cisco employee Milissa Santos was so irked by seeing a San Jose cop yap on his cell phone and “having a jolly good time laughing” while driving on a street near Cisco’s campus that she called MercuryNews to complain. Since July 1, Californians are not permitted to use their handheld cell phones while driving, so seeing the officer yap away on his handset “took me by surprise,” Santos, a Cisco customer service manager, told the Merc. “It was obvious that his call was not work-related, as he was having a jolly good time laughing,” she says.
The Merc reports:
Like it or not, police are exempt from the new law and can legally use a hand-held phone. And there is at least one reason for them not to go hands-free. But police departments are sensitive to public perception, and many are asking their cops to limit use of cell phones. A few have gone further. The cities of San Mateo and Santa Clara have issued hands-free devices to their cops. The reason: folks like Santos.”
Good for Santos for standing up and raising this issue.
