How bad does your job have to be for you to go back to your old job at Oracle? Today VMware announced that its executive vice president of research and development, Richard Sarwal, resigned and returned to Oracle. Sarwal joined VMware from Oracle in December 2007.
Stephen Herrod, Ph.D, CTO and senior vice president of R&D, VMware, will assume day-to-day responsibilities for VMware’s research and development organization. Dr. Herrod has been with VMware since 2001.
Herrod has his work cut out for him. In a test published today by Network World which pitted VMware ESX against Hyper-V for performance, ESX did come out the performance winner, but only barely and not in every instance tested. The test relied on a system limited to six concurrent VMs running on Novell’s SuSE Enterprise Linux (the only Linux Microsoft’s Hyper-V supports). While it might be comforting to VMware to see it outperforming Hyper-V on SuSE, many users are going to look at the cost of Hyper-V versus the cost of ESX and decide the tiny bit of performance gain from ESX isn’t worth the thousands of dollars.
VMware still has superior management, but Herrod had better step up his creativity and come up some more compelling reasons that VMware should remain an enterprises’ virtualization product of choice.
