Cisco to shun Oracle, Microsoft as software partners to work with Indian developers instead?

Cisco’s software ambitions don’t include making applications developed to help specific business

functions, such as purchasing and marketing, Cisco CEO John Chambers is cited as saying in a New York Times Bits post. Instead, it will partner with developers of such software. And who might those companies be? Oracle? Microsoft? According to the Bits post author Steve Lohr, Chambers said he’d be turning to Indian software and services companies, such as Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys Technologies and Wipro Technologies. That’s because, “They see the world as we do,” Chambers is quoted as saying. Apparently Chambers regards Indian software firms as platform-agnostic.

Being platform-agnostic has proved to be a rich strategy for Wipro, which in December forecast that it would make $2 billion in sales thanks to support deals from Cisco and Microsoft customers.

The Bits post also details how Cisco is continuing to send top managers to work stints in its Bangalore globalization center.
