T-Mobile’s Google Android-based HTC Dream phone is slated to become a reality next week. The carrier says it will host a press event in New York City Sept. 23 that, besides including presentations from Google and T-Mobile, will actually let attendees see, hold and use the new device. While Google has been demo-ing Android for a while, albeit on a device cloaked for secrecy, this will be the first time Android running on the HTC Dream will see the light of day officially.
The unveiling is significant because Android promises to bring an unprecedented level of openness to the mobile phone market. Users will not only be able to connect to any carrier’s network (although T-Mobile has first dibs), but they will also be able to download a wealth of applications, most of which should be available via Google’s Android Market.
