Calling all software developers: Cisco’s talking unified communications

Cisco’s Louis Marascio wants to change that. In his keynote today at the Communications Developer conference in Los Angles, Marascio talked up Cisco’s developer program, reports TMCnet.com’s FreedomeIQ blog. That program is centered on Cisco’s Unified Application Environment, which Marascio says offers any software gal or guy all s/he needs to build, deploy and manage applications. It is comprised of the Unified Application Server, the Unified Media Engine, and the visual development tool, Unified Application Designer.

Marascio hopes developers will use these tools to incorporate Cisco’s unified communications technologies into the business/social apps they create. According to the TMCnet.com story:

Marascio spoke about how developers can leverage the Cisco UC development environment, and then delved in to cover specific features of the Cisco Unified Application Environment release 2.5. He also referenced the relatively new Cisco developer community which launched in July.

The overt message of Cisco’s developer program is the idea that developers could and should write applications that live on a Cisco router. This, Cisco execs promise, would enable applications to be highly distributed, survivable, and redundant. So, if the network is the computer, then the router must be the server.
