Cisco’s $1,000 telepresence system may be here sooner than we first thought. Businessweek is

reporting that Cisco is planning to roll out a cutdown version of its $350,000 TelePresence for the consumer market to be launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. Cisco was first reported to be working on the consumer-grade version last year and it was thought that such a system wouldn’t be launched for another 2 or 3 years.

Back in 2007, it was reported that the consumer TelePresence will use one screen – the consumer’s own large HDTV – and will be designed so that anyone can install it with ease. In the beginning, it will run on a stand-alone device connected to the home broadband Internet connection but will probably be integrated into a set-top box and run a service delivered by the cable or telecommunications provider.
