Windows 7 will be called… Windows 7

Yesterday Mike Nash announced the official name for “Codename: Windows 7” on the Vista team blog… Wait for it… Windows 7!!!

This will be a rare time where Microsoft has chosen to keep the internal codename for a project as the RTM “public” product name. Personally, I’m not sure I understand the strategy. Obviously Microsoft wants something flashier than “Vista R2” or another nonsensical aspirational name. While many experts have said Microsoft may want to distance itself from the “Vista” name, Nash embraces it saying the goal of Windows 7 is “to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista,  while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows.”

Microsoft has gone on the offensive lately talking about the “Mac tax”, and blasting VMWare at VMWorld. If that continues I fully expect shock and awe at the Windows 7 launch event. Maybe even something that would outdo Apple in the press?
