Cisco, Juniper should do well in the current downturn, says Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs gave a glimmer of hope to Cisco and Juniper today as Simona Jankowski, an analyst at

the investment firm said Cisco is likely to outgrow its peers during the current downturn as well as in the long term, reports Reuters. Goldman also said it was “incrementally more positive” about Juniper after downgrading the shares and taking a wait-and-see stance for much of the year, reports Reuters. Jankowski is quoted as saying that “quality companies” that are less reliant on the financial sector should do well. The analyst is also cited as saying that spending by service providers – Juniper’s bread-and-butter – should pick up in 2009 ahead of the consumer or business market as carriers seek ever-bigger pipes.

Reuters may believe that spending by service providers will pick up but the future doesn’t look bright for some in this sector given that Cisco is cutting jobs in its Broadband Telephony Services business.
