Cisco is the greenest of them all, according to a new Vendor Matrix released by ABI Research. Cisco is ahead of Nortel and HP, which came in second and third place, respectively, in ABI’s evaluation of network switching vendors’ internal green initiatives as well as the greenness of their switches.
Vendors are assessed on innovation – how green a company is internally, and implementation – how green are their products. ABI Research says Nortel came in first in the implementation category for its switches designed for lower power consumption.
Cisco followed in second place on implementation, but it was that score coupled with its “strong green efforts [that] propelled Cisco to first in the overall rankings,” according to an ABI Research statement. Cisco was noted for its Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) and its ability to schedule power deliver to IP devices, according to ABI.
Cisco’s score for its internal greeness tied with HP’s. Cisco was praised for its “commitment to telepresence, recycling, establishing and meeting its carbon footprint goals, and its recent efforts at ‘hoteling’ employees.”
The results might put a crimp on Nortel’s aggressive campaign that claims Cisco customers are paying $6.1 billion in ‘Cisco energy tax’.
