Cisco Unity: Unity Configuration

The last blog covered some of the CUCM configuration elements required to integrate with Cisco Unity. This blog will cover the Unity setup required to integrate with Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM). There are two important wizard based utilities used in Cisco Unity to walk engineers through the setup of the system. The Cisco Unity System Preparation Assistant (CUSPA) is run on the Cisco Unity server after Windows 2003 server has been installed. CUSPA is a Microsoft Visual Basic script (CUSPA.vbs) that walks the installer through the setup of the following applications: • Windows 2003 service pack • Microsoft XML 3.1 • Microsoft XML 3.1 service pack • Internet Explorer 6 service pack • Microsoft Message Queueing Services • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service • Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) service • Microsoft SQL Enterprise server or Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine (MSDE) • SQL service pack • Microsoft .NET framework • Cisco Unity Report Engine It is recommended to run the Cisco Unity Server Updates Wizard after the installation of Cisco Unity to load the latest Microsoft and Cisaco hotfixes that have been regression tested by Cisco. It is recommended to never use Microsoft Update or Windows Update because the Microsoft fixes have may not have been regression tested against Cisco Unity. The references link at the end of this blog includes a link to a Cisco site that documents the Microsoft knowledge base (KB) articles that have been installed by the updates wizard. The web site also has a link to the Cisco Unity Server Updates Wizard. There are four critical users that need to be installed in the Microsoft Active Directory before installing Cisco Unity. The users should be added by the Microsoft Active Directory (AD) domain administrator in unified messaging infrastructures where Cisco Unity is integrating to the Microsoft AD domain. Voice mail only deployments will require the voicemail installer to use Microsoft Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) to install the four AD users. The following users will be installed • UnityInstall (Unity Installer) • UnityAdmin (Unity Administrator) • UnityDirSvc (Directory services) • UnityMsgStoreSvc (Unity Message Store) CUSPA does not check for the installation of Microsoft Active Directory or the Active Directory schema extensions required for Cisco Unity. Voice mail only deployments of Cisco Unity require the Cisco Unity server to be promoted to a Microsoft Active Directory domain controller (DCPROMO). CUSPA does not install the Microsoft Exchange message store, Exchange service packs, or Exchange tools. The next blog will continue the coverage of the Cisco Unity configuration with the CUICA tool.
