Desktop systems management vendor, ScriptLogic, is taking on security for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.
Security Explorer for SharePoint software lets IT administrators manage Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, (MOSS) as well as Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. The ScriptLogic software downloads to a desktop or server, and lets systems administrators manage security on Windows machines. For instance, administrators can manage, search, duplicate, and back up and recover permissions for file systems, printers, registries, file shares, services and scheduled tasks on SharePoint servers. However blogger Janus Bove from CMS Watch notes that Microsoft has yet to come out with a roadmap for the product.
Almost 6 months after its initial launch, Microsoft has still not issued clear plans nor direction for future releases of MOSS 2007. After being burned on Longhorn and other much-discussed future products, we can almost understand Microsoft’s hesitation here. But MOSS is now out in the world, and inasmuch as it remains a friendlier tool for integrators than licensees, a lack of future direction brooks higher than normal risk for buyers, particularly given the worldwide dearth of truly experienced MOSS 2007 consultants.
