Check Point Software is giving away ZoneAlarm, a personal firewall for Vista, it said on Thursday. Check Point says this is the first firewall from a major vendor to use the Windows Filtering Platform API. Of course, Vista includes its own firewall, Microsoft says. But the price is right for ZoneAlarm and Check Point is known for its firewall products, so could be worth checking out.
Check Point says they had to help Microsoft debug WFP, hence the four-month delay in releasing ZoneAlarm after Vista began shipping.

“At times, it seemed like we were an extension of Microsoft QA. They patched and made changes based on what we found while we were developing,” said Laura Yecies, the general manager of Check Point’s consumer security line.
